Oxygen absorbents are chemical substances that selectively absorb or consume oxygen in the environment, playing a crucial role in multiple fields. Their core function is to reduce oxygen concentration through chemical reactions, thereby inhibiting oxidation, delaying material aging, or creating an oxygen-free environment. With advancements in materials science and industrial technology, the application scope of oxygen absorbents continues to expand, covering industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, electronics, and cultural relic preservation.

In the food packaging sector, oxygen absorbents are one of the most common applications. By absorbing residual oxygen within the packaging, these agents effectively prevent oil oxidation, microbial growth, and food discoloration, significantly extending shelf life. For example, iron-based oxygen absorbents are widely used in vacuum packaging of dry foods such as biscuits, coffee, and nuts due to their low cost and high efficiency. Furthermore, composite absorbents developed for high-humidity environments (such as those containing activated carbon or moisture-absorbing components) further enhance preservation effects.

The pharmaceutical and health product industries are sensitive to oxygen, especially for pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and biological agents. Oxygen absorbents are used in medicine bottles, blister packs, or sealed containers to protect active ingredients from oxidative degradation. For example, some injectable or inhaled medications require storage in an oxygen-free environment, and medical-grade oxygen absorbers can precisely control the oxygen content within the packaging, ensuring drug stability. In recent years, customizable miniaturized absorbent tablets or pouches have better adapted to the miniaturization trend in modern pharmaceutical packaging.

In the electronics industry, oxygen absorbers are used to protect precision components from oxidative corrosion. During storage or transportation, trace amounts of oxygen in semiconductor devices, circuit boards, and battery packs can cause metal migration or insulation degradation. By integrating absorbents into antistatic packaging, a low-oxygen environment can be maintained, improving product reliability. Furthermore, oxygen absorbents are used in the preservation of cultural relics to slow down the corrosion of metal artifacts and the aging of organic materials, such as ancient books, textiles, and archaeological finds.

In the future, with increasing environmental protection requirements, biodegradable and non-toxic oxygen absorbents (such as bio-based materials) will become a key focus of research and development. Simultaneously, intelligent absorbents (such as those combined with oxygen sensors) are expected to enable dynamic monitoring and control, further expanding their application potential in high-end manufacturing and aerospace fields.
