Silicon Dioxide
At the heart of most moisture absorbing packets is silicon dioxide, commonly known as silica gel. Despite the name, silica gel is not actually a gel but a granular, porous form of silicon dioxide. It has a vast surface area which makes it a superb adsorbent material. Silica gel can adsorb approximately 40% of its weight in moisture and can thus maintain a dry state even in highly humid conditions.
Absorb Moisture
Silica gel packets absorb moisture through a process called adsorption. Not to be confused with absorption where materials soak up liquid, adsorption involves water molecules sticking to the silica gel’s surface. Each tiny bead of silica gel has a vast network of pores where water molecules get trapped. This process effectively removes moisture from the air and keeps the environment within the packaging dry.
